Date: February 9, 2009 Author: Carla Cranston
The Keewatin Flyers Atom Hockey Team were Gold Medal Champions this past weekend at the Mitchell Manitoba Atom Tournament.
The Flyers faced tough competition from teams attending from Winnipeg, and rural Manitoba communities. The Flyers were defeated in round robin play by the East St. Paul Aces; only to meet up with this team again in the Gold Medal Match. The Aces came out strong, scoring the first goal, to be answered shortly thereafter by the Flyers. The Aces scored again in the second period; with Flyers responding to tie the game going into the third. Flyers scored the go-ahead goal making the score 3 – 2 late in the third, keeping parents and coaches on the edge of their seats to the final seconds of the game. Goalie, Ryan Polischuk was a force between the pipes, stopping an incredible 32 shots on net in the final match-up. The Flyers add this Gold Medal to their earlier Gold Medal Victory in Pine Falls, Manitoba. Congrats Boys!!!! Go Flyers!!!!!
