Congratulations to all the LOTWMHA Atom hockey players who participated in the the 3rd Annual Shoot For a Cure event on Feb 17th. These kids raised $1000 for Shoot For A Cure, and about $2700 for the Kenora Triple Play organization. A 3-year total of just over $11,000.00 was raised, all by kids <10 years old. They were exposed to hands-on instruction on personal safety near the boards and body contact, spinal cord injury awareness, and refereeing issues. They also got to "air it out" in four unique skills stations that proved to be very entertaining. Hat's off to the team Skills Competition winners, the top fundraisers, and to Morgan McDonald who won the autographed World Junior Team Canada jersey. Thanks to the Norcom Lynx who were the top fundraising team, and to the AA Atom Thistles who had the highest team participation of the 7 teams involved. Finally, thanks to the approximately 25 volunteers who once again made this event what it was for the kids.
Introducing your new executive for 2010-2011. Welcome to new our new board members, Cori Libitka and Arlene Lesenke. These wonderful ladies have also taken on the task of convening Atom and Peewee respectively. Please thank them if you see them at the rink.
The Kenora Legion Bruins emerged C-Side Champs this past weekend at the annual LOTWMHA Atom tournament in Kenora. Backed by very strong goaltending down the stretch, the Bruins emerged with a hard fought 3-1 semi-final victory over a hard-working Interior Décor team to gain a berth in the big final on Sunday morning vs. Petro Canada, also from Kenora. Defense dominated the final game and with only a couple minutes left the Bruins were down 2-1 and could not seem to solve goaltender Corbin Paypompee who played rock-solid for the Petro-Can team from start to finish and shut the door on the Bruins’ forwards throughout the game. With the clock ticking down in regulation time, Bruin’s forward Jess Kellar’s relentless forechecking forced a turnover and Boe Rogers buried the biscuit into the mesh with only 16 seconds left in the 3rd period to force overtime. A five minute sudden-death 3-3 overtime period then began… with just over a couple minutes left the Bruins completed the comeback by snapping a rebound top shelf to seal the victory. Congratulations to both teams for a very entertaining game and some fantastic goaltending by Corbin Paypompee of Petro-Can and the Bruin’s Brandon Scott.
